Basic illumination concepts you should know

We are already experts in illumination, but we sure consider you should also have some clear basic concepts about the science of light. Here we explain some.

Luminous Intensity. We are talking about the amount of light seen on a surface. This flow produces a specific amount of light in a surface known as illumination intensity.

Luminous Flow. It’s the amount of light emitted by a light source. This is measured in lumen (lm).

Illuminance. It’s the formula that measures the amount of light seen in a space. Its unit in the International system is:

Lumen/m2=Lu

Also known as Photometric brilliance, is the link between the luminous intensity and the surface seen by an observer that is placed in the same direction.

Contrast. This means the luminance difference (amount of light) between and object and where it’s placed, or the different parts of this same object.

Subjective Brilliance. It’s the subjective attribute in any luminous sensation that takes places in a complete scale of qualities:

  • Shiny
  • Illuminated
  • Brilliant
  • Dull
  • Obscure

Absorption, reflection and transmission. Are the general process in which an incident luminous flow interacts with a way.

  • Absorption is the process in which the incident flow it’s been shoot.
  • Reflection is when the incident flow leaves a surface in the same incident side. This one can be spectacular, diffuse or a combination of both.
  • Transmission is the process in which the incident flow abandons a surface in a different side from the incident. It can be regular, diffuse or both.

Incident flow = Absorbed flow + Reflected flow + Transmitted flow

This are some of the concepts that we think are important to have in mind to get the most energetic efficiency in any project you may have.

¿Did you know any of this concepts? ¿Did you clear your doubts about illuminating concepts?
